Co-led with Hugo Parlier as part of Esch 2022 European Capital of Culture, our contribution to the Sound of Data project transformed crowd-sourced creativity into a multisensory mathematical experience. We invited audiences in Luxembourg and abroad to participate in creating visual compositions using mathematical tools, then collaborated with composers to transform this data into music and visuals that were showcased at Rockhal in 2022, the major Rock scene in Luxembourg.

The overall Sound of Data project was a collaboration between FNR, LIST, Rockhal and Uni.lu for Esch 2022 European Capital of Cultures.

This giant project bringing together mathematics, music, and outreach, focused on the creative talents of humanity and culminating in a concert with a crowd dancing on mathematics, is certainly one of the highlights of my outreach carrier for over the last years.

The hands-on experiences transcend language barriers, allowing participants of all ages to discover mathematical creativity through active experiences.

Featured in Dubai in 2022 (in the Luxembourg Pavillon) and in Osaka 2024 (in Luxembourg, Belgian and Swiss Pavillon), our activities bring mathematics to tens of thousands of international visitors.

Our series of workshops for science and culture festivals are created and animated as playgrounds for mathematical discovery.

Through specially designed games or art related mathematics activities, each workshop invited thousands of visitors to experience mathematics through hands-on exploration rather than explanation.

Animated with the help of mathematics PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, these festivals demonstrate how carefully designed activities with simple entry points and progressive challenges can make the activity of mathematical research accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

If there is no pleasure, then there is no math !

In 2018, I was the editor of “Through the looking glass”, the first science comics initiative in Luxembourg that transforms PhD research into accessible visual narratives and published in four languages (French, English, German, Luxembourgish).

With the support of FNR, this initiative independently grown into the “Lux:plorations” series, distributing over 30,000 copies while training PhD students in science communication. A fifth language (Portuguese) was also added.

The comics bridge research and public understanding through collaboration between scientists and artists, creating stories that brings research made in Luxembourg accessible to teenager audience.

Featured in permanent exhibitions and regional comics fairs, the project demonstrates how visual storytelling can break down both linguistic and conceptual barriers to scientific knowledge.

Since the first edition of Lux;ploration, I collaborate in the supervision of one or two of the stories.

Created with Hugo Parlier during the first COVID-19 lockdown, Astigmath transformed mathematics outreach into an interactive online trivia experience when in-person activities became impossible. Using platforms like Zoom and Kahoot, we hosted quiz sessions featuring guest mathematicians including Olga Paris-Romaskevich, Aline Parreau, and Amie Wilkinson, attracting 50-170 participants per event. The format successfully engaged high school students and families through playful exploration of mathematical concepts and their applications, demonstrating that meaningful mathematical experiences can thrive in virtual spaces. The initiative later expanded to live events, including sessions at Sorbonne Université Abu Dhabi.

Girls Exploring Math invites high school girls to experience mathematics beyond classroom stereotypes.

Through interactive workshops, encounters with professional mathematicians, and theatrical performances addressing gender biases, the program creates a space where young women can affirm that mathematics belongs to them too.

The day-long immersive experience focuses on creative aspects of mathematics, building confidence and community among participants while directly confronting the social factors that discourage girls from pursuing STEM fields.

GEM is organized every year around May 12, which is the birthday of Maryam Mirzhakani (1977-2017), the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal in 2014.

Scienteens lab are one day or half day workshops on campus bringing research and university-level topics to high school students. They are focused on hands-on experience and aimed at updating students’ perspective on contemporary science (they exist in biology, physics, mathematics and computer science).

I collaborated to the creation of two of these workshops:

• How to keep a secret ? Thanks to number theory (in 2017 with Gabor Wiese)
• How to find you way thanks to graph theory (in 2018 with Gabor Wiese and Thierry Meyrath.

Between 30 and 40 of these workshops are now conducted yearly by Thierry Meyrath with students from Luxembourg and the border region.

MATh.en.JEANS is a French educational program created in 1990 that enables secondary school students to conduct mathematics research under the guidance of professional mathematicians and teachers.

Students work in small groups throughout the year on research topics outside the standard curriculum, engaging in authentic scientific practice.

Each spring, the annual congress brings together students, teachers, and researchers to present findings through posters and presentations, receive peer feedback, and attend keynote lectures from recognized scientists. Following the congress, students publish articles from their work in the congress proceedings.

Introduced to Luxembourg in 2017, I’m the general coordinator of MATh.en.JEANS for Luxembourg. I also supervise a group every year, and organize one-day events yearly at Belval Campus with participants from Luxembourg.

In 2024, I chair the organizing committee of conference, which took place in Esch-sur-Alzette with 400 students and 100 teachers and researchers from Belgium, France and Luxembourg.

Conducted with Thierry Meyrath and hosted by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg, these week-long intensive internships immerse 4-10 high school students annually in the authentic work of mathematical research.

Working in the actual university research environment, students tackle open-ended problems requiring exploration, conjecture, and proof, while diving deep into topics like Shannon’s information theory and RSA cryptography that connect abstract mathematics to modern technology.

The small-group format allows students to experience the iterative nature of mathematical discovery—including productive failures and breakthroughs—while developing skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. By bridging secondary and higher education, the program helps students make informed decisions about their academic futures while gaining realistic insight into research careers.

Through the FNR’s “Chercheurs à l’école” program and the “Regards de géomètres” program of the Math en Scène association, fors instance, I bring mathematical thinking directly into classrooms across Luxembourg and the border region. These visits range from demystifying research careers with high school students to exploring winding numbers through art inspired activities with 7-8 year olds.

These encounters create pathways for students to discover other programs while demonstrating the university’s commitment to regional mathematics education.

I occasionally lead professional development sessions that reconnect mathematics teachers with contemporary mathematical thinking.

These trainings—covering topics from graph theory to integrating research in classrooms—invite teachers to experience mathematics through hands-on exploration before bringing these approaches to their students.

Take off ! is a science competition TV show for teenagers on Luxembourg elevision. With Hugo Parlier, we started to collaborate with the production in 2024 to create mathematics challenges for the show.

Our first challenge was a human size version of the Involution puzzle and was showcased during season 2.
