International Mathematical Olympiad 2013

The 54th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Colombia, has ended. Luxembourg was represented by a team of two contestants, led by leader Charles Leytem and deputy leader Mike Dostert. The Luxembourg contestants won one Bronze Medal. Individual results were as follows:

Finale de la 38ème Olympiade Mathématique Belge

Le 18 mai, la cérémonie de proclamation de la 38ème Olympiade Mathématique Belge a eu lieu à Mons. Après une conférence par le Prof. Thomas Brihaye, intitulée Mathématiques : quand la théorie des jeux mène aux prix Nobel, les lauréats de la 38ème Olympiade Mathématique Belge ont été proclamés. Benelux Mathematical Olympiad 2013

The fifth Benelux Mathematical Olympiad took place in Dordrecht (the Netherlands) over the weekend. Luxembourg was represented by a team of ten contestants, led by Charles Leytem, Bernard Felten and Mike Dostert. The Luxembourg team won one silver medal, awarded to Christina Meyer (Athénée de Luxembourg).

First European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad 2012

The First European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad is being held in Cambridge (United Kingdom). The questions are available here. Luxembourg was represented by a team of four contestants, led by Pierre Haas and Mike Dostert. (The fourth contestant, Tara Aghajani, was not able to enter the UK because her visa application was delayed.) The Luxembourg scores are as follows:

The Third Benelux Mathematical Olympiad

The Third Benelux Mathematical Olympiad (BxMO) will take place in Luxembourg from 6th to 8th May 2011. The teams will arrive in the afternoon of Friday, 6th May. The Olympiad ends in the afternoon of Sunday, 8th May.
The paper will be sat on Saturday morning in the annexe of the Lycée Classique de Diekirch in Mersch, where one of the Ersatz-IMOs took place in 1980. Teams will lodge in the youth hostel in Eisenborn. For further information about the Benelux Mathematical Olympiad, including its history and links to past papers and results, refer to the BxMO section of this website.

Olympiade Mathématique Internationale

L'Olympiade Mathématique Internationale 2010 se tient au Kazahstan en ce moment. Lors de sa réunion finale du 11 juillet, le jury, composé des leaders des pays participant à l'OMI, a fixé les seuils des médailles: 15 points pour une médaille de bronze, 21 points pour une médaille d'argent, et 27 points pour une médaille d'or. Le Luxembourg obtient deux mentions honorables, accordées aux participants qui résolvent complètement un problème sans pour autant obtenir de médaille. Les résultats détaillés sont les suivants:

Finale de la 35eme Olympiade Mathématique Belge

Le 29 mai dernier, la cérémonie de proclamation de la 35eme Olympiade Mathématique Belge a eu lieu à Bruxelles. Après une conférence par le Dr. Jean Doyen, intitulée Les nombres gigantesques et animaux gigantesques, les lauréats de la 35eme Olympiade Mathématique Belge ont été proclamés. Le prix Willy Vanhamme, qui récompense la démonstration jugée la plus élégante, toutes catégories confondues, a été remporté par Jérôme Urhausen, élève de 2eme à l'Athénée de Luxembourg.

Finale de la 35eme Olympiade Mathématique Belge

Suite à sa réunion du 24 mars 2010, le jury national de l'Olympiade Mathématique Belge a fixé les seuils de qualification pour la finale de la 35eme Olympiade Mathématique Belge. Les seuils de qualification sont, en catégorie MINI, 101 pour les élèves de 7eme, et 110 pour les élèves de 6eme, en catégorie MIDI, 96 pour les élèves de 5eme et de 4eme, et 100 pour les élèves de 3eme, et, en catégorie MAXI, 98 pour les élèves de 2eme, et 101 pour les élèves de 1ere. Sur base de ces seuils, les dix-neuf élèves luxembourgeois ci-dessous participeront le 28 avril à la finale qui se tiendra à Namur:

Deuxième Olympiade Mathématique du Benelux

Le test AIME 2010 a été organisé le 16 mars 2010 à Mersch, le meilleur résultat ayant été obtenu par Philippe Schram (AL) et Grégoire Genest (ISL) qui ont tous les deux résolu six problèmes. À l'issue du test, l'équipe luxembourgeoise pour la Deuxième Olympiade Mathématique du Benelux a été choisie. Because a number of arduous mathematical competitions lead up to the International Mathematical Olympiad, the latter is undoubtedly the summum of enrichment programmes for young mathematicians, as a bureaucrat's ponderous parlance has it. Therefore, here comes the much-coveted

THE 50th INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

Official Report by the Luxembourg team

In mid-July 2009, Germany hosted the fiftieth International Mathematical Olympiad (or IMO for initiates), the world championship of secondary school mathematics. Bremen welcomed 565 contestants from 104 countries, who were to engage in a challenging competition in the chivalrous fight for shiny metal - a formulation which uninspired speakers often uncritically embrace.
At the IMO 2009, Luxembourg was represented by a team of six contestants, led by leader Charles Leytem (LUX7) and deputy leader Ming-Koon Hsu (LUX8). Gruesome photographs of the contestants can be found at the official internet site of the IMO, where the interested reader may find virtually any information on the International Mathematical Olympiad, including explanations of some jargon used in this report. In case the intellect craves after something beyond sobre statistics of results, reports on the conduct of previous IMOs can be retrieved from http://www.imo-register.org.uk/reports.html. These are not indicated in case of total lack of humour. The IMO is an individual competition, but a ranking of nations is published and carefully scrutinised by team leaders. As some happily point out, Luxembourg has held for many years the position of the leading Grand-Duchy. In 2009, Luxembourg ranked 60th among 104 competing countries and won three bronze medals as well as one Honourable Mention (awarded to those contestants who do not get a medal, but solve one problem completely). This was the first time ever Luxembourg took part in an IMO with a complete team of six contestants. As often happens, we were relegated to the last place in the Benelux by a convincing margin.
