Mark Watkins (Sydney) Number Theory in Magma
I will give some examples of doing number theoretical computations with Magma, for instance with modular forms, elliptic curves, hypergeometric motives, point counting on varieties, etc. No previous experience will be assumed, and some of the talk might simply be about Magma in general.
David Zywina (Cornell) Families of abelian varieties and big monodromy
To an abelian variety over a number field, for example the Jacobian of a curve, one can attach a representation that describes the Galois action on its torsion points. This representation encodes much of
the arithmetic of the abelian variety; in particular, it determines the abelian variety up to isogeny. We will study how the images of these representations vary over a family of abelian varieties and give some arithmetic consequences. (joint work with David Zureick-Brown)
Chun Yin Hui l-independence of compatible system of (l-adic) representations
For any compatible system of semisimple l-adic representations, let G_l be the monodromy group at l. We show that the semisimple rank and the number of A_n factors for all n belonging to N\{1,2,3,4,5,7,8} of G_l is independent of l.
