Travel to Bristol

The recommended arrival date is 17 August 2008 and the recommended departure date is 23 August 2008.

Bristol is a city in the south-west of England. Here is a map of where Bristol is in the country. It is well served by road, rail and air links.

See the visitbristol.co.uk website for maps of the city and other useful information.

Road

Bristol is at the intersection of the M4 and M5 motorways, with a spur called the M32 leading into the city centre. For maps and directions, try Multimap or Google Maps.

Coach services to all over the UK are provided by National Express.

Rail

The railway station in central Bristol is called Temple Meads. Do not make the mistake of getting off at Bristol Parkway, which is quite a way out of the city. Rail information is available at National Rail and tickets can be bought online through various outlets including The Trainline. Much cheaper fares are often available on major intercity routes if you book well in advance; the situation can be quite confusing as different train operators offer different varieties of special offers. Another site to try is megatrain.com, which has a limited number of very cheap tickets to certain destinations.

Air

Bristol Airport is located a little way south-west of Bristol. There is a regular bus service to Temple Meads station, in the city centre. Flights are available to and from many places around the UK and Europe.

London Heathrow airport is also connected to Bristol by a National Express coach service.

Getting to the University

Map of the University of Bristol Precinct

Click here to see the location of the School of Mathematics in Google Maps. The University's web site has useful information about getting to the University by road or by public transport; in particular, there is a free bus from Temple Meads station to the University. The Department of Mathematics has more information.

Bus services 8/8A or 9/9A run to the University precinct from Temple Meads Station every 10 minutes during the day, and taxis are readily available. To get to Maths, take service 9 or 9A, disembark outside the Hawthorns on Elton Road. Go across the zebra crossing (Woodland Rd), turn right, cross the next road, and go up the drive in front of you, marked Stuart House. This will bring you to the front of Royal Fort and Stuart House. To access the maths building bear left, past the front of the houses, under the arch (prince Rupert's Gate) and turn right at the next road. The main entrance is a few yards along, up the steps to your right.

To get to the Maths department, and Royal Fort, from the airport you can either take a taxi, or use the Airport flyer bus service, which will take you into the city centre.

Accommodation

Accomodation is provided for invited participants. All (external) invited participants stay at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel.

Some useful information about accommodation options is provided on the University web pages. Lists of hotels, bed & breakfast accommodation and hostels are available on the Visit Bristol site or click here.

There is also some accommodation available in University halls during the summer vacation. For information on this, see the Summer vacation accommodation site.
